The Wednesday Child / Szerdai gyerek

Lili Horváth|Coming of Age

Maja’s days solemnly pass as she is living between the crumbling plaster of her apartment and the rusty railway carriages of a Budapest suburb. Wearily, she drags herself to work, the wage of which barely covers her rent. Her boyfriend is rarely around and her son, whom she had to put in a home because she couldn’t afford to look after him, is keeping his distance from her. It is only once the young woman hears about a start-up competition at the community centre that she begins to take responsibility for her own life. Breaking the vicious cycle of poverty, however, is everything but easy. Director Lili Horváth’s multi award-winning debut work offers the perfect platform for main actress Kinga Vecsei’s breathtaking performance, which finds its path in the gap between vulnerability and rage.
