by Robert Eggers
On an uninhabited island in the north-eastern United States of the late 19th century, the experienced Tom and his new colleague Efraim begin their four-week shift as lighthouse keepers. Despite technically having to take turns, the overbearing Tom insists that he alone will spend the nights up in the tower, and condemns the reticent Efraim to do lesser work. But this marks only the beginning of a slowly escalating power struggle between two lost souls on the verge of madness. When the four weeks are finally over, a gathering storm prevents them from leaving the island. Director Robert Eggers’ moody gothic horror tale conjures up goose bumps – not least because of its disturbingly beautiful aesthetics and the outstanding leading actors William Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
