The Human Scale

Andreas M. Dalsgaard|DOK: Gesellschaft & Mensch

Half of the world's population currently lives in urban areas – but how will life be if this figure drastically increases over the next few years? How will cities have to be built to cater for the needs of people? Filmmaker Andreas M. Dalsgaard takes us on a journey across the globe, from Copenhagen to Melbourne, Chongqing to Christchurch, on the trail of Danish architect Jan Gehl, a visionary design consultant relentlessly fighting to re-orientate 20th century car-centred urban planning towards man and his quality of life. It doesn’t matter if it’s New York's financial district or the slums of Dhaka, the central questions remain the same: Can a city make us happy? What makes a good city? THE HUMAN SCALE meets international urban planners, architects and other thinkers exploring these very questions.
