Border Lines

The Golden Thread

Nishtha Jain|Dokumentarfilm

The golden age of the jute industry is over and the natural fibre is barely used anymore. For the Bengalis, the jute economy was once essential. Numerous factories were built and millions of people earned their living doing the exhausting work. Director Nishtha Jain visits the Bengali factories and documents their current state. Nostalgic scenes show the outdated factory buildings and machines. In addition, Jain conducts interviews with employees whose exhaustion is written all over their faces. Poignant images bring home to us in a touching way the problems of our consumer society.
