by Mehrdad Oskouei
The filmmaker asks a teenager in front of the camera whether she is afraid of death. Her answer is “No”. She and the other young women in the film are in an Iranian detention centre. Most of them have been sentenced to several years in prison for murder or accessory to murder. Their victims are their fathers or husbands. Director Mehrdad Oskouei accompanies the girls as they go about their daily prison life. Without judgment or commentary, he lets the protagonists speak for themselves, when they talk about their unbearable situation at home or loudly discuss what role they play as women in society. After STARLESS DREAMS, Mehrdad Oskouei once again devotes himself to young Iranian female prisoners and sheds light on the precarious conditions from which they tried to free themselves.
