Colonia Roma, Mexico, 1970: while political riots hunt the country, Cleo is working as a domestic servant for an upper middle-class family. When the head of the family fails to return home after a long business trip, Cleo helps his wife Sofia to overcome her loneliness and lovingly cares for her four children as if they were her own. Cleo becomes part of the family and does her best to hold it together while increasingly violent clashes between students and government militias take place right in front of their home. When she becomes pregnant and her boyfriend leaves her, Cleo, just like Sofia, is confronted with the prospect of having to raise her child as a single mother.
