Portrait de la jeune fille en feu

Céline Sciamma|Drama

Brittany, 1770. Marianne is to paint a wedding portrait of the beautiful Héloïse who, however, refuses to be painted, and thus to be married. This marks the beginning of Marianne’s secret gaze upon her motive. Gradually, she becomes the young lady’s companion in order be able to grasp images of Héloïse and paint her during the night. A strange and fragile intimacy starts to develop between the two. In one of the most exciting films of the year, director Céline Sciamma paints a luminous portrait of a growing and liberating love, trapped in the corset of social constraints. She succeeds in creating a minimal yet precise chronicle of loneliness, passion and memorability.
