Mary & Johnny

Samuel Schwarz|Beziehungsdrama

‘Zürifäscht’, the football World Cup, a hot summer’s night – the whole city’s abuzz. Good-looking Mary planned to watch the game, but boyfriend Johnny has just lost his job, making him understandably touchy. One angry word leads to another and the two are swept up in a torrent of misunderstandings which causes them to go their separate ways. Neither remains alone for long, however, as they embark upon an odyssey through Zurich’s festival, and both are quickly led astray. Mary is carried off by her chance acquaintance Hostettler, whose efforts to increase his success rate with women include the use of knock-out drops. And Johnny spends his night at the fairground with loudmouth small-time crook Mischa and his partner Fränzi. Loosely based on Ödön von Horváth’s socio-critical folk play “Kasimir und Karoline” set before Munich’s Oktoberfest, MARY AND JOHNNY tells of petty crooks, romantic tribulations and dashed hopes against the backdrop of Zurich’s largest folk festival.
