Liyana

Aaron Kopp|DOK: Gesellschaft & Mensch

Swaziland is an African country with only one million inhabitants. A quarter of the population has AIDS, which is why there are many orphans. In this touching documentary, the children tell their stories and, under the guidance of the South African writer Gcina Mhlope, invent a fairy tale about a girl named Liyana, who wants to save her kidnapped twin brother. In the narrative, the character is brought to life in animated scenes. LIYANA grants insight into the everyday life of these orphans. While severe themes are raised, it is an optimistic film that celebrates the power of imagination and storytelling. This impressive, critically acclaimed debut work has won over 30 awards at international film festivals. Recommended for age 10 or older
