La Bonne Épouse

Martin Provost|Komödie

Paulette and Robert Van der Beck run a school for housewives in Alsace. Generations of young women are educated here to fulfill their marital duties in an exemplary manner. This includes the correct ironing of shirts, the preparation of a roast chicken and, above all, the holding back of one's own opinion. But the rural estate is turned upside down when Robert unexpectedly dies, leaving Paulette sitting on a mountain of debt. On the verge of ruin, she and her sister-in-law are left to turn the tide. As if this were not challenging enough, the revolutionary spirit of 1968 enters the old school walls – and Paulette's former teenage love enters the stage. Director Martin Provost’s lively moral comedy is a monument to emancipation. Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche captivates in a film full of pithy dialogues and subtle situation comedy.
