by Nicolas Bedos
At the age of sixty, the once successful comic artist Victor has long become frustrated and cynical. Victor’s son can no longer stand to sit back and gaze upon his father’s embittered existence and therefore convinces him to follow a crazy idea: a staged “journey back in time” to his happiest day, the day he met his wife Marianne in 1974. This illusion is made possible by the successful entrepreneur Antoine, who uses authentic scenes and actors to relive any event. Victor agrees and finds himself overwhelmed by his nostalgia and the young version of his Marianne – but every illusion has its price. LA BELLE EPOQUE marks the second film of new directorial talent Nicolas Bedos and presents itself as a multifaceted comedy in which nothing is as it seems.
