I Carry You With Me

Iván dreams of becoming a chef one day, but for now, he has to make his living as a dishwasher in Puebla City, Mexico. Even though he is no longer together with his ex-girlfriend, he continues to support her and their son. In order to forget his worries for just one night, Iván visits a secret club where he meets Gerardo and falls in love. Iván finds himself under pressure when his ex-girlfriend gets wind of his secret, because a homosexual relationship would mean fatal consequences for his status as a father. In the hope of a better life, Iván emigrates illegally to the USA and promises himself that he will one day be reunited with his son the love of his life, Gerardo. Using both re-enacted and documentary sequences, director Heidi Ewing delivers the story of two real male characters caught between their Mexican roots and the American dream.
