Hope Frozen

Pailin Wedel|DOK: Gesellschaft & Mensch

Matheryn died of a brain tumour at the age of two, but she is supposed to return one day. In mourning the tragic loss of his child, her father, a Buddhist scientist, along with
his family, decided to put all their hopes into the so-called “cryopreservation”, a controversial technology that should allow his daughter to resume her life at an indefinite point in the future. Hence, her brain currently lies frozen in an American laboratory. Matheryn’s brother Matrix, also a young scientist, pursues the possibilities of research with passion and unlimited curiosity. What the young man discovers, however, upsets the radical confidence that the family has placed in scientific advancement. Thai filmmaker Pailin Wedel accompanies this unorthodox family, and leads us to the very centre of the tension between rational science, private obsession and Buddhist spirituality.
