A strap-on dildo, a horse stable, a pistol and some blood: shy Natalie’s wedding night ends dramatically, forcing her and her heavily pregnant, rebellious friend Poppie to flee to the Karoo semi-desert. FLATLAND is an idiosyncratic, humorous, and fascinating Roadmovie that illustrates South African society and its deep-seated inequality with unabashed directness. This third work by exciting filmmaker and screenwriter Jenna Bass opened the Berlinale’s “Panorama” section this year.
