by Leopold Lindtberg
While travelling around the world, a businessman and would-be writer crafts pompous love letters to his wife, expecting her to answer in the same style. His wife lacking literary talent, takes advantage of the unsuspecting village teacher who is in love with her. When the deception is exposed, her husband demands a divorce, which has surprising consequences for all concerned. In collaboration with SRF, Cinémathèque Suisse, Memoriav and Praesens-Film, ZFF once again presents the restored version of a Swiss cinema classic. Leopold Lindtberg’s 1941 Venice Biennale award-winning film adaptation of Gottfried Keller’s novella by the same name marks a gem of Helvetic film history.
