by Meikeminne Clinckspoor
Twelve-year-old Niilas is living in a large Belgian city with his beloved father. To his horror however, the boy discovers that he is to spend this summer in Lapland, the rural north of Sweden, where his mother resides with her new family. To his despair, he soon finds himself on a brightly lit night amidst forests, lakes and reindeer herds. Everything is new to him – and nothing is going his way: His half-brother Pontus is getting on his nerves, and it is his fault that a reindeer calf has gone missing. Only thanks to his half-sister Sunnà, Niilas finally rediscovers his roots and ends up experiencing the best summer of his life. Meikeminne Clinckspoor’s debut feature is greatly inspired by the enchanting character of Lapland’s landscape, which also facilitates the epiphanous experiences of protagonist Niilas.
