Blue Island
Chan Tze Woon|DOK: Gesellschaft & Politik
The sea between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland shimmers blue. This is where Chan Hak-chi swam against the waves and made his way across the sea to Hong Kong as he fled the Cultural Revolution in 1973. Up to the present day, the history of the Special Administrative Region is marked by a struggle for freedom and independence. In BLUE ISLAND we get to know activists from past and present. Through interviews, archive footage and re-enacted scenes, filmmaker Chan Tze Woon builds a bridge from the key years of resistance to the current protest movement. With virtuosity, he draws a fascinating portrait of an extraordinary city and allows us share in the vision of the future of its courageous citizens.
