Whether "Pippi Longstocking", "Kalle Blomquist" or "Ronja, the Robber's Daughter", the stories of Astrid Lindgren have shaped and touched upon the childhood hearts of millions of people worldwide. Lindgren's own sheltered childhood in a small-minded Swedish backwater village, however, ended abruptly when she met married newspaper publisher Reinhold Blomberg at the age of 18 and became illegitimately pregnant – a scandalous deed in Sweden in the 1920s. Biopic ASTRID deals with this turbulent time in the life of the later immensely successful author and tells how the young Astrid finds the courage to overcome the hostilities of her environment in order to lead a free, self-determined life as a modern, working woman and mother.
