Anita

Longman Leung|Biopic

In the 1980s, Anita Mui shaped Hong Kong's pop culture like no other and carried it out into the wider world. Her engaging voice, elaborately choreographed dance numbers and extravagant fashion style earned the cantopop singer comparisons with Madonna. And she was soon conquering the big screen alongside Leslie Cheung, too – until, that is, her star suddenly burns up at the end of the 1990s. Winner of five Hong Kong Film Awards, this lovingly crafted biopic illuminates the rise and fall of a cultural icon. Along the way, the film tells of the heyday of a city of seemingly unlimited possibilities that will never exist again.
