A Taste of Whale

Vincent Kelner|DOK: Umwelt & Natur

The slaughtering of pilot whales has been part of Faroe Island culture for over 600 years. Although killing the animals as a means of securing the population's existence has long since ceased to be necessary, whaling is still practiced with pride. However, critical voices are becoming louder, not only from international animal protection organisations such as "Sea Shepherd", but also from the island's own inhabitants. After all, with the dangerously high levels of mercury in whale meat, it's not only the lives of the animals, but also the health of the people that is at stake. Filmmaker Vincent Kelner uses impressive footage to bring the whales' habitat tangibly close and explores the different levels of a heated conflict from several perspectives. Age rating: from 12 years
