The International Film Music Competition will be held for the twelfth time at the 20th Zurich Film Festival (3. to 13 October 2024).

Once a year the Zurich Film Festival and the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG collaborate with the Forum Filmmusik to present the International Film Music Competition. The global competition requires film composers to create and submit their original musical score for a given short film.

This year, film musicians are asked to submit their original symphony orchestra score for THE FLYING SAILOR by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby. The short film draws upon the largest accidental explosion in history, when two ships collided in the Halifax Harbour in 1917. It is an exhilarating meditation on a few seconds of a life, and a celebration of the wonder and fragility of being.

The Scores can be submitted directly via the IFMC's website between March 18 and May 17, 2024. A jury of international experts from the fields of film and music will choose three finalists, whose compositions will be world premiered by the Tonhalle Zurich Orchestra during the annnual Cinema in Concert event during the Zurich Film Festival. Good luck!
