The International Film Music Competition will be held for the twelfth time at the 20th Zurich Film Festival (3. to 13 October 2024).
Once a year the Zurich Film Festival and the Tonhalle-Gesellschaft Zürich AG collaborate with the Forum Filmmusik to present the International Film Music Competition. The global competition requires film composers to create and submit their original musical score for a given short film.
This year, film musicians were asked to submit their original symphony orchestra score for THE FLYING SAILOR by Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby. The short film draws upon the largest accidental explosion in history, when two ships collided in the Halifax Harbour in 1917. It is an exhilarating meditation on a few seconds of a life, and a celebration of the wonder and fragility of being.
From the approximately 192 anonymously submitted compositions, three finalists were selected: Krzysztof Dobosiewicz, Ahmed Soroko, and Théo Schmitt. Their works will be premiered on October 5, 2024, together with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich under the direction of Frank Strobel. The jury, led by Oscar winner Howard Shore, will choose the best composition on the same evening and present the winner with the Golden Eye for the «Best International Film Music 2024».
