Tonhalle Orchester Film Music Concert and Competition
7th International Film Music Competition
Composers from 44 countries took part in the 7th International Film Music Competition to score Steve Cutts’ short film HAPPINESS. The jury is on hand on the evening to present the Golden Eye for „Best International Film Music 2018“ to the winning composer. The award is endowed with a CHF 10’000.- cash prize.
Film Music Concert: Thriller
What would a good thriller be without its gripping music? Almost as famous as the films themselves are the tracks from Mission Impossible, Kill Bill and „Tatort“ – so it’s only right to finally place this captivating film music centre stage. The programme includes two soundtracks by former Red Hot Chili Peppers percussionist, film composer and this year’s jury president Cliff Martinez. A concert full of suspense and energy performed by the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich.
Special Guest
The film scene „Ende der Illusionen“ from “Tatort Die Geschichte vom bösen Friedrich” (2016) composed by Swiss film composer Christine Aufderhaar will be performed live for the first time.

Whether hero or villain, Donald Sutherland’s remarkable acting has left Hollywood with a great legacy. Younger audiences may know him as President Snow in THE HUNGER GAMES franchise. The father of movie star Kiefer Sutherland has appeared in some 14 series, including the screen adaptation of Ken Follett’s bestseller THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH. We look forward to an inspiring ZFF Masters session.

FLORIAN HENCKEL VON DONNERSMARCK
Win an Academy Award straight out of film school? Director and screenwriter Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck can show you how. His 2006 feature film debut DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN won the award for best foreign language film. His story of an author who is watched over by a Stasi co-worker also won seven German Film Awards. It was next stop Hollywood for his second feature, the all-star-cast thriller THE TOURIST. Von Donnersmarck has returned to Germany for his most recent movie WERK OHNE AUTOR, which screens this year in ZFF’s Gala Premiere section.

JULIAN SCHNABEL
Julian Schnabel is not only a worldwide renowned filmmaker, but also a painter and one of the most famous exponents of Neo-expressionism. He gave his debut as a director withBASQUIAT, a film about New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat,and dedicated his second film BEFORE NIGHT FALLS to author and Cuban exile Reinaldo Arenas. He celebrated his biggest success with the four-time Academy Award-nominated LE SCAPHANDRE ET LE PAPILLON, which also won the award for best director at Cannes. His most recent project ETERNITY’S GATE is a fiction film about Vincent Van Gogh.

WIM WENDERS
Wim Wenders is one of Europe’s most influential filmmaking personalities. This versatile director, who has also made a name for himself as a photographer, won the critics’ prize at Venice with his debut film DIE ANGST DES TORMANNS BEIM ELFMETER. This was followed by such classics as DER AMERIKANISCHE FREUND and PARIS, TEXAS (Palme d’Or, Cannes 1984). His documentaries BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, PINA and THE SALT OF THE EARTH went on to become audience favourites. In his ZFF Masters session, Wenders will offer insight into his sources of inspiration and take part in a public Q&A session.

Collaboration with the Swiss National Science Foundation allows us to present a selection of photographs from its Scientific Image Competition; visualisations from Zurich University of the Arts’ students and images from Life Science Zürich (Zurich University and ETH) can be seen at Kalanderplatz; the best short films from the Fast Forward Science web video competition are presented together with our partner Science et Cité; and the University of Basel’s OCTlab invites you to dive into a globally unique virtual reality world and discover the human body from the inside.
