2nd Event (18:30): Film Music Competition & Grand Film Concert

137 participants from 28 countries created a soundtrack to accompany Run Wrake’s short film THE CONTROL MASTER (UK 2008). A jury of specialists selected five finalists whose compositions will be premiered by the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and Zürcher Kammerorchester under the baton of André Bellmont. While the jury chooses its overall winner, the audience will be treated to an exclusive concert comprising science fiction soundtrack classics, and enjoy a guest appearance by Martin Tillman. The evening will finish with the Award Ceremony.

3rd Event (21.15): Film Music Concert

Main theme from ROCKY / „Odessa“ from ALI / soundtracks from RAUMPATROUILLE ORION (short) / „Diva Dance“ aria from THE FIFTH ELEMENT / main theme from MEN IN BLACK/ Sci-Fi-Suite

Science fiction is the theme of this year's Film Music Concert.

A highlight of the evening sees the performance of a shortened version of Peter Thomas’ suite for the TV classic RAUMPATROUILLE ORION. The legendary German composer himself will attend the event as a honorary guest. A further highlight comes in the form of a guest appearance by Zurich-born composer and cellist Martin Tillman, who will play the solo part for cello from his piece „Odessa”, which he wrote for the film ALI.

The suite arranged exclusively for this special event is a grand medley of science fiction music classics from STAR WARS, FLASH GORDON and STAR TREK, plus a vocal performance of Éric Serra’s „Diva Dance“ from the film THE 5th ELEMENT!

Aftershow Party (22:00, Papiersaal Sihlcity)

Live visuals representing the very best of 90s cinema will combine with a venue ‘from outta space’ and tracks brought to you by Scott Vega, Ozzy and Röhrender to create a party that’s truly out for this world!

Todd Haynes

Todd Haynes is one of the most interesting personalities of the current independent cinema scene. Born 1961 in Los Angeles, the screenwriter and director is considered to be the pioneer of the 1990s coined “New Queer Cinema”. Haynes continually succeeds in undermining traditional narrative structures with his uncompromising and often sublimely erotic films. His directorial debut, the science fiction drama POISON, garnered the main award at Sundance in 1991. This master of semiotics has since picked up more than 46 international awards, including the Special Jury Prize at Cannes for his glam rock homage VELVET GOLDMINE (1998), the Special Jury Prize at the Mostra in Venice for his Bob Dylan biopic I’M NOT THERE (2007), and an Academy Award nomination for FAR FROM HEAVEN (2002).

Tue, 29.09.15, 17.00–18.00, Filmpodium, Language: English

Jean-Jacques Annaud

Born in 1943, the French director Jean-Jacques Annaud began his career with a bang: his debut feature LA VICTOIRE EN CHANTANT, a parable about colonialism, won an Academy Award in 1977. Originally active in the advertising sector, Annaud’s name reached beyond the circle of purely French cineastes to include a much wider audience when he directed the multi award-winning literary adaptation THE NAME OF THE ROSE (1986). His boundless curiosity and enthusiasm for spectacular themes enables him over and again to bridge the gap between art and commerce with cinema hits such as SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET (1997) and ENEMY AT THE GATES (2001).

Fri, 02.10.15, 12.30–13.30, Filmpodium, Language: English

Mike Leigh

Mike Leigh is one of Britain’s most significant filmmakers. He has garnered countless awards, including a Golden Palm (SECRETS & LIES, 1996), a Golden Lion (VERA DRAKE, 2004), and seven Academy Award nominations. His films aim to reflect human experience in all its contrariety and complexity. And they feel as lifelike as if life simply unfolded before his lens. However, his works are the result of intensive preparation: he develops characters and scenes over months before he starts on the screenplay. The screenwriter and director offers insight into his work at this ZFF Masters session.

Sat, 03.10.15, 15.00–16.00, Filmpodium, Language: English

Profession: Stuntman

Speaker: Manuel Schweizer, Stuntman

Stunt performers jump in when things get too dangerous for the actor. They dive off roofs, jump from moving cars and scurry up cliff faces. Stuntman Manuel Schweizer’s ZFF Talk casts a light on this fascinating job. The 28-year-old from Toggenburg has appeared in productions such as TATORT and ACHTUNG, FERTIG, WK! How do you prepare for a stunt? What dangers do you face on set? Manuel Schweizer discusses his passion in his talk.

Nouvelle Vague au féminin

French auteur cinema has experienced an upsurge after a new generation of female directors, most of them born in and around 1980, set new standards. This new “Cinéma au féminin” is less sociological and academic than that of the last generation of filmmakers. It reflects the state of modern woman without being overly feministic. Experts and exponents will discuss this “new wave” at a ZFF panel discussion.
