Dopo la guerra / After the War

by Annarita Zambrano New World View: Italy

Apart from her name, there is little which reminds Viola of her Italian roots. Living in Paris, the 17-year-old is just about to graduate when student protests at the University of Bologna culminate in a murder, which will leave her life turned upside down. Her father, Marco, a former Red Brigade activist, is suspected of having orchestrated the murder from Paris. To the horror of his daughter, Marco feels he has no choice but to flee. It is not just Viola that has to pay for Marco’s dark past, but also his mother, Teresa, and his sister, Anna, both of whom still live in Italy and have not heard from Marco for 20 years. Annarita Zambrano's excellently staged debut highlights the consequences which a formative chapter of recent Italian history can come bear upon its families.
