Personal Affairs / Omor Shakhsiya

by Maha Haj Feature Film Competition

In Nazareth, Nabeela and Saleh spend every evening in front of the television – after long years of marriage, the two have nothing more to say to each other. While she sits knitting a pullover, he spends his time searching Wikipedia for curious knowledge about plants and animals. Their children have long since flown the nest: the oldest son, Hisham, now works in Sweden as a doctor. The youngest son, Tarek, wishes to remain an eternal bachelor. His heavily pregnant sister, Samar, who incessantly forces Tarek into married life, is having a hard time with her day-dreaming husband and his mother, who is losing her memory. Be it Israel, Palestine or Sweden, political conflict or lack thereof; despite their constant lively exchange of views, each member of this family has a hard time putting in words what they actually want to express. Who has not? PERSONAL AFFAIRS manages to put a smile on our faces with its heated discussions and its pithy non-communication.
