Landfill Harmonic

by Brad Allgood, Graham Townsley ZFF for Kids

How do you convey music to children when you can’t even afford instruments? Resourceful music teacher Favio Chávez has an idea: simply make your own violin, cello and other instruments – from rubbish. His music school is located in a slum right next to the largest landfill site in Paraguay. With the aid of hardworking helpers, he manages to conjure up playable instruments from old paint buckets and tin cans, and offers the children here an escape from poverty through the medium of music. After first appearing in a video on YouTube, the Recycled Orchestra and its extraordinary musicians is now receiving invitations from concert organisers to perform around the globe.
