    01. October 2011

Following 10 days of intensive film-viewing pleasure, the Zurich Film Festival finally draws to a close. The US box office hit THE HELP is billed as the festival’s Closing Film. Emma Stone, Viola Davies, Octavia Spencer and the film’s director Tate Taylor are expected to adorn the Green Carpet (corso 1, 19:45). But before the 2011 festival ends for good under this star-studded constellation, there are still a number of cinematographic gems to see. Director Andreas Dresen is on hand to present his drama HALT AUF FREIER STRECKE (Le Paris, 17:00). The US documentary BETTER THIS WORLD (corso 4, 16:45), which casts a critical eye on post 9/11 justice, also receives a screening. And finally, the Filmpodium presents three masterpieces by our guests of honour: Iñárritu’s AMORES PERROS (15.00), Haggis’ CRASH (18.15) and Sean Penn’s MILK (20.45). Enjoy our last festival day!

    Saturday 10/01 Overview

    01. October 2011

Red Carpet glamour? The Zurich Film Festival’s carpet is green – but there’s glamour galore this evening when filmmakers gather for the grand Award Night. In addition to Alejandro González Iñárritu and Paul Haggis, who are both set to receive lifetime achievement awards, filmmakers such as Marc Forster and Maximilian Schell are also expected to tread the Green Carpet in front of Zurich’s spectacular Opera House. Photos and autographs from 20:00 onwards.

Before the big award night, jury members Stephen Nemeth, Janine Jackowski, Laurence Fishburne and Güzin Kar will give an insight into their function (Jury Talk, Festival Centre, 12.00). THE CARRIER celebrates its European premiere within the framework of the ‘Border Lines’ series (corso 2, 13:30). The film screening is followed by a discussion on AIDS with filmmaker Maggie Betts and MSF workers. Paul Haggis discusses his methods in the Public Zurich Master Class (Filmpodium, 15:00). The animated world of ‘onedotzero’ enters its last round in the Plaza (EXTENDED PLAY, 18:00 and WAVELENGTH 11, 20:30). And last but not least, an alteration to the programme means an additional helping of THIS MUST BE THE PLACE – a second chance to see Sean Penn deliver a truly brilliant performance in his role as Cheyenne the rock star. Enjoy!

      NEW WORLD VIEW - TURKEY

      16. September 2011

The New World view series is dedicated to Turkish cinema this year. In recent years, not only established Turkish filmmakers such as Nuri Bilge Ceylan or Semih Kaplanoglu have shown that they are capable of great things. All the films - six feature films and a documentary, portray human relationships and family bonds in an era of social, domestic and political change, with the metropolis of Istanbul playing an important recurring role. The New World View series is curated by Nikolaj Nikitin.

In collaboration with Winterthur International Short Film Festival, we also present a block of 8 turkish short films.

      The films in this section:

Roman Polanski To Pick Up His A Tribute To Award

      15. September 2011

Director Roman Polanski will attend the upcoming 7th Zurich Film Festival to accept the lifetime achievement award that was intended for him two years ago, to honor his outstanding career achievements as a filmmaker. The World Premiere of a full-length non fiction film will follow the tribute ceremony. Details regarding the film and the world premiere will not be released before the official screening on Sept 27.

Born 1933 in Paris, Roman Polanski first attracted attention with his 1962 feature KNIFE IN THE WATER. This was followed by works such as REPULSION (1965), CUL-DE-SAC (1966) and his Hollywood debut ROSEMARY’S BABY (1968), which brought him the Academy Award for best screenplay. His box-office blockbusters include THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS (1967), CHINATOWN (1974) and the Holocaust drama THE PIANIST (2002), which won him a Golden Palm in Cannes and the Academy Award for best director. Following THE GHOSTWRITER (2010), this year saw the release of his film adaptation of the theatre piece CARNAGE, which was well received by enthusiastic critics at its screening in Venice.

Polanski’s cinematographic work has enjoyed years of worldwide renown. His occupation with such topics as social inability, angst and self-destructive violence is apparent throughout his whole body of films. He portrays his broken, lonely protagonists with often claustrophobic and surreal visuals.
